For anyone that has had an issue or problem with the Jolicloud Express Installer for Windows, Jolicloud has created a Safe-Mode Pre-Beta Installer program.

Here are the steps:

  1. Download JolicloudExpressSafe-PreBeta.exe (2.2 Mb)
    http://mirror.jolicloud.typhon.net/JolicloudExpressSafe-PreBeta.exe
  2. Download Jolicloud-PreBeta.iso (602 Mb)
    http://mirror.jolicloud.typhon.net/Jolicloud-PreBeta.iso
  3. Save the ISO on your system drive root (usually your C: drive)
  4. Run JolicloudExpress-safe.exe (If Vista or Windows 7, right click and run as Administrator)

Let us know if you had any luck with the Safe-Mode installer in the comments below, or in our Forums.

Good Luck!

Bad Netbook Positions

Using your Dell Mini has major advantages – being able to have it sit on your lap, throw it in a bag on the go, or just use at the kitchen table.

However, there are a lot of funky positions people get themselves into to use their netbook.

The good people at Lifehacker have a great chart on bad positions:

Competition from Asus?

A new Asus Eee pad is rumored to be coming out with nVidia’s Tegra platform.   While that is news by itself that doesn’t really matter to Jolicloud – does it?  Because of Microsoft’s reasoning of not permitting Windows 7 on the Tegra platform, Asus needs an OS solution, and is rumored to be building their own OS.  Could it compete with Google’s Chrome or Jolicloud?

The fine people at NetbookNews have the full story.

Recycle Old Netbooks

Jolicloud has a link in the new menu structure to recycle your old netbook – donate it to someone.
Recycle

What’s cool on this, is after clicking Recycle this computer.  Jolicloud will automatically remove all of your personal data from the netbook and return Jolicloud to a “factory setting.”

Using Jolicloud in VirtualBox

Here’s a great post on how to use Jolicloud in VirtualBox (found on the Jolicloud Get Satisfaction page).

I noticed nobody’s brought up the issue of VirtualBox Guest Additions so I thought I would write a short how-to in case anyone was wondering how to get it working. Jolicloud doesn’t come with everything you need to build the extra kernel extensions, so you’ll need to install a couple of things. First you need to mount the Guest Additions ISO (click the Devices menu, the Install Guest Additions). Once you have it mounted open up a new Terminal window and type this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install make linux-headers-$(uname -r)
cd /media/cdrom0
sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run

Each line is a separate command, so you’ll have to hit enter after each one. Once everything is done downloading and compiling restart the virtual machine and when it starts back up everything should be working.
