Jolicloud 1.1 Quick Review – So Far…

I’ve used Jolicloud 1.1 for a few days now and like what I’ve seen so far:

Pros:

  • Easy Install (as always)
  • Nice splash on startup/shutdown
  • Quick boot
  • My Apps all there on a fresh install & update

Cons:

  • My network connection keeps dropping – not sure if it’s my location or what
  • Install took about 1/2 hour.   Sat at 89% for quite some time
  • My Chrome icon doesn’t work anymore, just Chromium
  • HTML5 Video Launch broken too

Again, only a few days, and this is what I’ve seen during the install & use of Jolicloud 1.1 on a stock Dell Mini 9.

Overall, I’m happy with my Jolicloud 1.1 experience.   YouTube clips are watchable, even the Hulu app on Low video is enough to watch a show on.     I wish I could add Rhythmbox to the launcher, I have to go through 1 more click than I’d like.

Also, I like that I can rearrange the launcher items, but sometimes it takes a while to move from screen three to one – maybe some area where I can have them all on one screen to organize.   Also, could I label some for Internet, or Social, Music, etc. that would be cool too.

Don’t forgot to follow me within Jolicloud – ‘Jeff Jolionmini.com’   Just search for JoliOnMini and it’ll bring me up – love checking out others recently added apps to see if there’s anything I’d like too.

Jolicloud 1.0 Live Edition

Going to be near a computer, but not your netbook?   Want to still use Jolicloud?   There is a way to get your Jolicloud experience when you’re not with your own netbook.

Get a 1GB+ USB jump drive, and put the Jolicloud 1.0 iso on it.

Boot off of the jump drive on your computer at select the”Try Jolicloud without making changes to your computer” option.

Once Jolicloud has booted, you can still log into your My Jolicloud account.

I recently used this and it was fantastic!   You can use this with Mac, Windows, a different Linux, any PC.  On a hackintosh I didn’t have the divx codec installed and knew Jolicloud would be able to play it right out of the box.  I was unable to get into my Private folder, but the rest of the drive worked great.

Any other unique ways you use Jolicloud?

For anyone that has had an issue or problem with the Jolicloud Express Installer for Windows, Jolicloud has created a Safe-Mode Pre-Beta Installer program.

Here are the steps:

  1. Download JolicloudExpressSafe-PreBeta.exe (2.2 Mb)
    http://mirror.jolicloud.typhon.net/JolicloudExpressSafe-PreBeta.exe
  2. Download Jolicloud-PreBeta.iso (602 Mb)
    http://mirror.jolicloud.typhon.net/Jolicloud-PreBeta.iso
  3. Save the ISO on your system drive root (usually your C: drive)
  4. Run JolicloudExpress-safe.exe (If Vista or Windows 7, right click and run as Administrator)

Let us know if you had any luck with the Safe-Mode installer in the comments below, or in our Forums.

Good Luck!

Interested in trying Jolicloud?    There is the Windows Install executable that allows you to dual boot Jolicloud within Windows, or for purists, you can install just Jolicloud on your netbook.

Download the iso from Jolicloud.   There are tutorials on making a usb drive with Jolicloud here.

Windows Installation

The new Beta of Jolicloud is set to use a Windows installer to ease newer users into installing Jolicloud.   My guess is similar to the way Wubi installs Ubuntu, the new visual installer will allow users to have multiple OS’s on a single netbook.

With some luck we’ll be posting more pictures of the Windows Installer soon.
